‟Preserving the Human Connection: Clinical Education in the AI Era” by Sarah Redding, Ashley Flagge
Abstract:
In an era where Generative AI can simulate medical data and draft reports, the “humanity” of the clinical encounter – empathy, physical touch, and moral reasoning – remains irreplaceable. This session explores a multi-modal study designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and clinical practice in audiology. While the intervention utilized AI-assisted learning and video tools for technical skill acquisition and retention, this research also focused on the social learning environment through standardized patient encounters. Results from twenty audiology graduate students showed that while technology aided knowledge retention, human-centered interaction was rated as the primary driver for a significant increase in clinical confidence. In this research presentation, we will examine student perceptions of technology-based vs. human-centered learning, consider ways to strategically integrate video-based resources and AI when developing tools for student learning, and discuss the importance of human interaction to develop critical thinking, empathy, and self-reflection essential to successful clinical encounters.
