Abstract:
In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice issued significant updates to the digital accessibility requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, with full compliance required by April 2026. These changes apply to all Title II entities, including public universities, and expand institutional responsibility for ensuring effective communication, reasonable modifications, and equal access to all services, programs, and activities.
Mathematical content often relies on complex notation, visual representations, and specialized software, raising questions about accessible course materials, websites, assessments, and instructional technologies. This presentation will focus on what these new requirements mean in practice, with particular attention to the unique challenges they pose for Mathematics Departments. I will highlight resources and strategies I have found helpful for improving digital accessibility in mathematical contexts. Finally, the session will invite participants to share tools and resources they have discovered, with the goal of building a collective understanding and support network as departments prepare for the 2026 compliance deadline.
